About Great Western…in March 1871, Charles Champlin, one of the 13 founders of the Pleasant Valley Wine Company, sent a case of champagne to his close friend Marshall P. Wilder, a well-known wine connoisseur in Boston. Wilder declared it to be “the Great Champagne of the Western World.” Great Western Champagne was born.
Today, after nearly 150 years of continuous production in Hammondsport, New York, Great Western is America’s most glorious champagne.
Great Western was the first American champagne to win a medal in a major European competition.
In the early twentieth century, Great Western reportedly sold more champagne than all of the French houses combined. Great Western has enhanced the wine lists of the most prestigious American hotels and restaurants.
Great Western was the official champagne of the National Baseball Hall of Fame Induction in Cooperstown and has been a part of celebrations by the great teams in sports including the New York Yankees, the New York Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
During the Reagan Administration, Great Western Presidential Seal Champagne splits were featured on Air Force One, Marine One, in the White Hall Mess, at Camp David and in the President’s box at the Kennedy Center in Washington.
Great Western Champagne has been the official champagne of Watkins Glen International, one of America’s great road racing courses, for more than 50 years. Iconic drivers such as Jacky Ickx, Jackie Stewart, Derek Bell and Jeff Gordon have enjoyed Great Western in the winners circle after hard-fought triumphs at the Glen.
Great Western Champagne is the official champagne of the National Women’s Hall of Fame Induction held every two years in Seneca Falls, New York and the New York Writers Hall of Fame Induction held annually in New York City.
The family-owned Great Western Winery in the Finger Lakes of New York is the largest producer of bottle-fermented champagnes in the eastern United States and is proud to be home to Great Western, the most honored American champagne.
