FOUR CHAPLINS MEMORIAL SERVICE
On February 11, an Interfaith Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the Building #5 Auditorium of the Canandaigua VA Medical Center.
The Four Chaplains Memorial will honor the selfless sacrifice of four U.S. Army Chaplains along with close to seven hundred lives lost when the U.S.S. Dorchester was mortally struck eighty miles off the shores of Greenland on February 3rd, 1943. The four U.S. Army chaplains of different faiths - Methodist, Jewish, Protestant and Catholic - each gave away their life preservers and their chances for survival. The four chaplains went down together with the ship. Those chaplains were Lt. George L. Fox, Methodist; Lt. Alexander D. Goode, Jewish; Lt. John P. Washington, Roman Catholic; and Lt. Clark V. Poling, Dutch Reformed.
Their sacrifice is a reminder that although we have differences we are encouraged to live together with goodwill and cooperation regardless of different faith and backgrounds as we gather to remember all that perished that day during World War II.
The Canandaigua VA Medical Center welcomes and invited the community to participate and attend.
