FLCC - Celebrating 50 Years
FLCC CELEBRATES 50 YEARS: A host of activities are planned to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of the college’s founding. Originally called Community College of the Finger Lakes, the college began offering full-time, credit-bearing classes in various storefronts in downtown Canandaigua on Feb. 1, 1968.
Exactly 50 years later, Feb. 1, 2018, FLCC has planned its first event. That includes the sealing of a time capsule, the release of a commemorative book and a gallery exhibit of work by FLCC’s first art faculty members and their students.
The Feb. 1 celebration, free and open to the public, is called “From the Storefronts to Lincoln Hill: Celebrating 50 years at FLCC.” The lineup of events includes the art exhibit opening and artists’ talk, the FLCC Student Corporation time capsule dedication, anecdotes from faculty and staff from the 1960s, ‘70s and early ‘80s, and an opening reception for the gallery exhibit with refreshments and live music.
The day also will feature the release of a full-color 50th anniversary commemorative book, “This Bold Decision: The Story of Finger Lakes Community College.” The limited edition, 124-page book will be on sale for $18. It was written and designed by FLCC Community Affairs staff members Sarah Butler of Canandaigua, Lenore Friend of South Bristol and Jessica Youngman of Newark.
Other anniversary activities are a downtown wine walk Feb. 3, a dinner at the main campus Feb. 9 and a golden anniversary dinner at the main campus May 11.
