Celebrating National Poetry Month at FLCC
At Finger Lakes Community College, we see service as the heart of our mission: service to students, to prospective employers, and to the community at large. However, our students are vulnerable to feelings of disconnection, alienation, and powerlessness, all of which can prohibit interest in service and civic engagement generally. We hope these discussions will open the conversation for students, faculty, staff and community members to creatively reflect on what it means to serve themselves and others.
Facilitator George Payne will use the text The Civically Engaged Reader to frame an evening series of conversational workshops, which will include live readings, videos, interactive discussion, and activities. In celebration of April as National Poetry Month, George has selected readings from the poets Billy Collins, Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, and Pablo Neruda. Every week in April he will focus on work by one of these poets, discussing themes of service, identity, culture, and belonging.
