The City of Canandaigua is getting ready to celebrate the commissioning of a new alternative energy project that has converted an old city landfill/transfer station into a new solar array facility. “Our solar project is an endeavor City Council is very proud to see coming to fruition,” said Canandaigua Mayor Ellen Polimeni. “It will save the city money and make use of an area that would be difficult to transition to another use due to its history as a dump and transfer station.”

The $7 million dollar project, partially funded by a grant from NYSERDA, should save the city $3.5 million in energy costs over the 25 year contact and will provide electricity credits from the two solar arrays producing 4 megawatts DC combined. The savings in this project will be applied directly to the city electric bills, which will help the City continue to reduce costs without impacting the services it provides to the community.

“We looked at this year’s Earth Day on April 22nd and thought we should use this annual environmental event as our Countdown to Commissioning date to alert our community of this important facility being dedicated very soon,” said John Goodwin, Canandaigua Assistant City Manager. “Visit our website www.canandaiguanewyork.gov for updates and watch the clock tick down to this significant event!”

The official commissioning and ribbon cutting event will take place on Thursday, May 25, from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Joining Canandaigua city officials and dignitaries will be the partners that made this project happen: RER Energy Group, Hunt Engineering, New Energy Equity, AEP Onsite and the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency-NYSERDA.
